GitHub invoices and receipts: where to find and download them

GitHub keeps receipts and invoices on the Billing & Licensing pages of the account that pays. Here is where to click for a personal account, an organization and an enterprise.

Updated

The short version

  1. In the upper-right corner of any page on GitHub, click your profile picture.
  2. Open the Billing & Licensing pages of the account that pays (see the table below).
  3. Click Payment history.
  4. Click the eye icon to view a receipt, or the download icon under “Receipt” or “Invoice” to save it.

These are the steps from GitHub’s documentation on managing payment and billing information.

Where the billing pages are

AccountPath
Personal accountProfile picture → Settings → Billing & Licensing in the Access section of the sidebar
OrganizationProfile picture → Your organizations → Settings next to the organization → Billing & Licensing
EnterpriseProfile picture → Your enterprises → the enterprise → Billing & Licensing tab

Each account is billed on its own and gets its own receipts. If you pay for a personal plan and also own an organization, look in both places.

Enterprise accounts that pay by invoice

Enterprises on invoiced billing see their invoices on the same tab (GitHub Docs: Managing invoices for your enterprise):

  • Current invoice: on the Overview page, find “Latest invoice” and click View invoice to open the PDF. If everything is paid, the section is labelled “Estimated next payment”.
  • Pay: click Pay now in the same section.
  • Older invoices: click Past invoices in the sidebar and then the reference number in the “REFERENCE” column to download one.

Receipts by email and billing contacts

GitHub sends billing emails to the billing contacts of the account. To have them go to your accounting department as well:

  • Organization: Billing & Licensing → Additional billing details → add an email recipient.
  • Enterprise: Billing & Licensing → Billing contacts → add a contact or change the primary one.

What GitHub charges and when

According to GitHub’s billing overview, a bill can contain three kinds of cost:

  • a fixed monthly cost for a paid plan or a Copilot plan
  • fixed monthly costs for additional products you subscribe to
  • metered usage, such as GitHub Actions minutes, once you exceed what your plan includes

For personal and organization accounts, the billing date is the day the paid plan was started and repeats on that day. Metered products follow the calendar month, from the first to the last day. Payment is by credit card, PayPal or a connected Azure subscription.

Company name, address and tax ID on the receipt

Receipts show the billing information stored for the account. You edit it on the Billing & Licensing pages under Payment information. If your accounting needs a company name, an address or a VAT or GST ID on the document, enter it there before the next charge. Receipts that already exist are not always reissued with new details; if you need a corrected document for a past payment, contact GitHub Support.

The names of these fields have changed with GitHub’s billing platform, so the labels you see may differ slightly from older screenshots and guides.

Billing your own clients for work on GitHub

Everything above is about what GitHub charges you. The opposite direction, charging your clients for the pull requests you merged, is what Git Invoice does: you pick the pull requests and commits, enter the hours and download a PDF in which every line links back to GitHub. No sign-in is needed to try the demo, and the invoice generator works without GitHub at all.

Questions and answers

Where do I find my GitHub invoices?

Click your profile picture, open Settings and choose Billing & Licensing in the Access section of the sidebar. Under Payment history, every payment is listed with a download icon in the Receipt or Invoice column. For an organization, open Your organizations, then Settings next to the organization, then Billing & Licensing.

What is the difference between a GitHub receipt and an invoice?

A receipt documents a payment that has already been charged to your card or PayPal account. An invoice is a request for payment, and GitHub issues those to enterprise customers who pay by invoice. Both are downloaded from the billing pages.

Why can I not see the billing pages of my organization?

Billing settings are visible to organization owners and billing managers. If you are a regular member, ask an owner to download the receipt or to add you as a billing manager.

How do I get a receipt for GitHub Copilot?

Copilot is billed to the account that subscribed to it. Its charges appear in the payment history of that personal account, organization or enterprise, together with the other products of the account.

Can receipts be sent to our accounting department?

Yes. An organization can add email recipients under Additional billing details on its Billing & Licensing page. An enterprise manages them under Billing contacts.

I want to invoice my own clients for work on GitHub. Is that what this page is about?

No, this page covers what GitHub bills you. To bill your clients for pull requests and commits, use Git Invoice: it lists the work from your repositories and turns it into a PDF invoice.
