How it works

  1. Add your lines. One line per task or deliverable, each with a date, a quantity and a price. The total updates as you type.
  2. Fill in the parties. Your name and address, the client's name and address, and tax IDs if you need them. Numbering, tax and payment details sit in the folded sections below.
  3. Check the preview and download. The preview is the real PDF, not an approximation. What you see is the file you get.

Short on time? Pick a starting point under “Start from”, or open one of the invoice templates and replace the sample data.

What an invoice needs to contain

The exact rules depend on where you and your client are based. These fields are required almost everywhere, and the generator has a place for each of them:

FieldWhy it is there
Unique invoice numberLets both sides refer to the document. Use one sequence and never reuse a number.
Issue dateStarts the payment term.
Your name and addressIdentifies the supplier. Companies use the registered name.
Client name and addressIdentifies who owes the money.
Description, quantity and unit priceSays what is being charged for. “Development” is not enough; name the work.
Date of supplyWhen the work was done, if it differs from the issue date.
Tax rate and tax amountRequired when you charge VAT, GST or sales tax.
VAT or tax IDYours on every VAT invoice, the client's for cross-border business sales in the EU.
Total amount dueThe one number the client is looking for.

For the full legal lists, see the European Commission's page on VAT invoicing and the UK government's guide to what invoices must include. This tool does not check your invoice against the law of your country. If you are unsure, ask an accountant.

Hours or fixed price?

Hours × rate suits ongoing work where the scope moves: maintenance, consulting, sprint work. The PDF shows hours, your rate and the amount per line, plus the total hours next to the subtotal.

Quantity × price suits agreed deliverables: a website, a design package, a licence. Each line carries a quantity and a unit price, and hours do not appear at all.

Not sure what to charge per hour? The hourly rate calculator works backwards from the income you need.

Tax lines and tax notes

If you charge tax, enter the rate and pick the name it goes by. If you do not charge tax, most tax systems expect the invoice to say why. Three common cases come as one-click presets:

  • Reverse charge. For services sold to a business in another EU country. The invoice must carry the words “Reverse charge” and both VAT IDs.
  • Small business exemption. For sellers below their country's VAT registration threshold.
  • Outside the scope of VAT. For supplies that are not taxed where the seller is based.

Payment terms that get you paid

  • State a due date, not just “Net 30”. The generator prints both.
  • Put the bank details or a payment link on the invoice itself.
  • Add the client's purchase order number if they gave you one. Many accounts payable teams reject invoices without it.
  • Send the invoice as soon as the work is accepted. The term starts on the issue date.

Billing for code? Skip the typing

If your work lives in GitHub, you do not have to reconstruct the month by hand. Git Invoice lists your pull requests and commits, you tick the billable ones and enter the hours, and every line on the PDF links back to the work. Try it with sample data in the demo.

Questions and answers

Is the invoice generator really free?

Yes. There is no account, no trial and no limit on the number of invoices. The PDF footer carries one small line, “Generated with git-invoice.com”.

Do I have to sign up?

No. The form works without an account. Signing in with GitHub is only needed if you want to pull pull requests and commits into the invoice instead of typing the lines yourself.

Where is my data stored?

In your browser. The PDF is generated on your device and nothing you type is sent to a server. Your own details and the client block are kept in the browser's local storage so you do not have to retype them next time; the Reset button clears them.

Which currencies are supported?

Euro, US dollar, British pound, Swiss franc and Japanese yen.

Can I add my logo?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPEG or WebP file under “From”. It is printed at the top right of the invoice.

Can I bill a fixed price instead of hours?

Yes. Switch “Bill by” to “Quantity × price”. The columns on the PDF then read Qty and Price instead of Hours and Rate.

Does it calculate tax?

Enter a tax rate and choose what the tax is called: VAT, GST, sales tax or simply tax. The tax is calculated on the subtotal after any discount. If you charge no tax, use the tax note to say why, for example a reverse charge.
